knitting | purling through the front and back (kfb | kfp)
Go into the stitch as if to knit ...
... and finish knitting it, but keep it on the left hand needle.
Go through the back loop of the same stitch again ...
... and finish knitting it through the back loop.
The stitch has now been doubled.
To double purl stitches (kfp), proceed in the same way, but purl the stitch instead of knitting it and instead of knitting through the back, purl the stitch it through the back loop.
