Since I started writing knitting patterns, I've become much more aware of one thing than I was before: there are still far too many patterns that are not size-inclusive!
Personally, I think it's a real shame and sad. We should all know by now how difficult the (fashion) world is when it comes to clothing sizes. I find it even more difficult to see that there are so many incredibly beautiful patterns out there, which are then only accessible for a very limited size range.
What about all the other sizes? Don't all knitters deserve to be able to choose any design they like, if that's what they want? And why should there only be sizes in the form of S, M, L and XL anyway? That's only 4 different sizes, that's really a very limited space.
So it's obvious to me: Knitting should be size-inclusive!
That's why I think it's very important to draw attention to size-inclusive garment design. I myself make sure to make all my patterns available to a wide range.
It's so important to consider all body types and sizes, because everyone has the right to feel confident and fashionable.
There are many reasons why you should design size-inclusive clothing. One of the most important reasons is that it helps to represent and celebrate the diversity of body shapes and sizes. By offering size-inclusive clothing, you can ensure that all people have the opportunity to feel good and beautiful.
Another important reason is that size-inclusive designs also play an important role in promoting inclusion and reducing discrimination. By representing a wider range of sizes and body shapes, you can help everyone feel welcome and seen.
Thinking on a commercial level, the production of size-inclusive clothing also offers only advantages. It allows companies to appeal to a larger customer base and increase their sales. There is also a growing demand for size-inclusive garments and companies that meet this need can stand out from the competition.
In summary, designing size-inclusive garments is important to represent and celebrate the diversity of body shapes and sizes, promote inclusion and reduce discrimination.
So I've added some tips for you here on how to design size-inclusive clothing. Please keep in mind that this is only advice and appeals from my part:
Understand the importance of size inclusion: The first step in designing size-inclusive is understanding the importance of catering to all body types and sizes. This means not only including larger sizes, but also designing for petite, tall and plus sizes.
Research different body types: It's important to research different body types and understand the unique fit challenges that come with them. This will help you design clothing that is both flattering and comfortable for a variety of sizes.
Use or create a wide size chart: When designing clothing, you need a chart that covers a wide range of sizes. This will ensure that your clothing is accessible to as many people as possible.
Pay attention to fit: Fit is crucial when designing size-inclusive clothing. Pay attention to how the clothes look on different body types and adjust accordingly.
Test your designs on real people: An incredibly important point! Before you publish your design, test it on real people of different sizes to make sure they fit and flatter all body types.
Be intentional in your use of language: Be mindful of the language you use when describing your clothing. Avoid language that reinforces negative stereotypes about body types. An easy way to start is to adjust your size descriptions. Try using a numerical sequence of 1, 2, 3 ... instead of XS, S, M ...
Be inclusive and diverse: Try to include people from different backgrounds, genders, and body types to show how your design looks on different individuals.
All of these are suggestions that I think can contribute to the inclusion of a wide range of sizes.
If you follow these tips, you can design clothes that are both fashionable and accessible to all.
Always remember that everyone deserves to feel confident and fashionable, regardless of their size.
